SWAP YOUR SWEETS! written in candy corn letters

Swap Your Sweets 2016

Halloween is right around the corner! No, we’re not going to tell you or your kiddos not to enjoy any candy, BUT we do want to let you know about a fun way to enjoy some of your candy and send the rest to our troops overseas!

Now through November 15th you are invited to Swap Your Sweets! You can bring in your extra or unwanted Halloween candy to any Mortenson Family Dental, BracesBracesBraces or Kid’s Dentistree location (in Kentucky or Indiana) during that office’s regular hours to get a $5 gift card!

Here are the rules and details:

Each person may swap one bag of candy.

You must have at least one full, sandwich-size bag of candy.

No chocolate! (It melts in the mail when shipped overseas.)

All of the candy that we collect will go to Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit organization that annually sends 150,000+ care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, hygiene and hand-made items, plus personal letters of appreciation, to New Recruits, Veterans, First Responders, Wounded Warriors, Care Givers and to individually named U.S. Service Members deployed overseas.

Have a safe and fun Halloween and remember, you have until November 15th to swap!

Meet our Partner: American Heart Association

At Mortenson Family Dental, Kid’s Dentistree and BracesBracesBraces (Mortenson Dental Partners), we are committed to improving the overall health of the communities we serve. Oral health is very connected to your heart and overall health. Poor oral health can lead to pain and discomfort, it can affect your ability to eat nutritious foods, it can impact your quality of sleep, and infection in your teeth or gums can spread throughout your body. That is why we partner with the American Heart Association (AHA) to raise awareness for cardiovascular health and wellness.

Meet the AHA

large

The American Heart Association is a non-profit organization focused on heart disease and stroke education that impact communities across the United States. They advocate smoke-free zones, more walkable and bikable streets, better nutrition and health education in public schools, and affordable healthcare for all. Their work is funded by events such as Heart Walks, Heart Balls, Go Red For Women Luncheons, Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart; by memorial gifts and by donations to our workplace giving and mail campaigns. Individuals, corporations and foundations support our work with generous donations. Planned giving vehicles include wills, trusts, gift annuities and gifts of appreciated assets. Learn more.

Close to Our Hearts

At Mortenson Dental Partners, heart health is important to us for more than its impact on oral health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, and as an organization, the majority of our team members are women. Not only that, but the majority of our followers on social media are women too! We are committed to helping spread awareness and funding research to help educate the community, but to also positively impact the lives of our team members and patients. The work of the AHA is saving lives each and every day and we want to support that effort.

For the last two years, we have called on our team members and patients to help us raise funds for the American Heart Association Heart Walk. It is because of your generosity that we are proudly able to say, Mortenson Dental Partners has been the top fundraising company for the walk for the part two years! For that we say thank you! Thank you for making our community a better place to live, for helping to fund life saving research, thank you for helping educate others about the importance of heart health and for rallying together to support such a great cause!

About JDRF One Walk

JDRF One Walk® has a single goal: creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). We hope you’ll join us this year as we walk and raise money for life-changing research for the millions affected by this devastating disease.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. If you have T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. This means you must constantly monitor your blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin from a pump and carefully monitor your eating and activity every single day.

There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D. And—currently—there is no cure. But thereis something you can do to help.

When you join one of the hundreds of JDRF One Walks across the country, the money you raise will support JDRF—the leading global organization funding T1D research. And, you’ll have a great time doing it! That’s because you’ll walk with a committed community that is passionate about doing whatever it takes to help JDRF turn Type One into Type None.
Juvenile Diabetes impacts our families, our patients and our communities. Join our team as we support the JDRF this weekend at Churchill Downs.  Check in is at 11:30.

Dental Hygiene Tips: The Daily 4

The Daily 4 represent the foundation for a healthy smile. Brushing, flossing, rinsing and chewing every day – also using proper technique – won’t guarantee perfect dental hygiene for the rest of your life, but they will improve the color of your teeth, the way your breath smells, the health of your gums and have a significant impact on your overall health. Are you doing the Daily 4 right? Keep reading for tips on technique and frequency, or head over to adha.org for some more in-depth information.

The Daily 4

Brush: This one is easy. Brush for two minutes at least twice each day. Most people like to brush when they wake up and before they go to bed. But brushing after every meal doesn’t hurt! Are you using the correct technique when you brush? Click here to find out.

Floss: You might’ve seen some recent reports about the effectiveness of flossing. The ADHA and Mortenson Family Dental are united in our opinion — Flossing is still an important part of your dental hygiene routine. If you’d like to read more about it, check out this article we wrote.  And for tips on proper flossing technique, click here.

Rinse: Did you know teeth alone account for less than half of the mouth? Don’t forget about the rest! Rinsing with an antimicrobial mouth rinse helps eliminate biofilm and bacteria that brushing and flossing cannot. Talk with your dentist to figure out which mouth rinse is right for you. For a simple guide on rinsing, click here.

Chew: Believe it or not, chewing sugar-free gum is not just good at curing bad breath. Chewing sugar-free gum also stimulates salivary glands in your mouth, which helps clean out food and neutralize acids found on your teeth. So go ahead, chew some gum after your meal. Just make sure it’s sugar-free!
