Third Mortenson Generation Enters Dentistry

Everyone knows the most important part of our name is Family. It’s literally how our company started! Founded in 1979, Mortenson Family Dental‘s first location was in Middletown, Kentucky, and had only two employees: Dr. Wayne and Sue. Since then the whole family’s gotten involved, with many of the Mortenson’s sons going to dental school and opening their own locations. Last month, Dr. Wayne and Sue’s granddaughter Kate went through the white coat ceremony for University of Louisville’s School of Dentistry. When she graduates in 2020, she’ll be the third generation of Mortensons to enter dentistry.

We spoke with Dr. Wayne about his granddaughter and of course he had a lot of great things to say.

Dr. Wayne Mortenson Headshot“I am thrilled to have another generation entering dental school. It is my dream to make our company generational, not just for the Mortenson family, but as many of team members children as possible.

Kate has been a varsity cheerleader and has been a High School Cheer Coach for the past four years. She has her dad and granddad’s work ethic. She enjoys life, but is very focused on her goals.

Kate will definitely help carry my vision on for another 35 or 40 years, as will many others. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment to see outstanding young people value the opportunity dentistry offers. Good dentists make a difference in the health and well-being of so many individuals. It is an extremely rewarding profession.

Having family members in the dental profession has made our family closer. We love the business and the opportunity it affords each one of us. Each person contributes at the level and in the area they enjoy most. We are blessed to have leaders (not family) that bring the knowledge, talent and commitment to grow and sustain the vision of building a legacy.”

We have proudly served the community for over 35 years and are excited to keep it going. Good luck, Kate!

Build-A-Bears for Ronald McDonald House

A woman holds a small sweater for a build-a-bear

A few weeks ago, our leadership team committed to coming together to learn together and do good together. The event was called the Inspire Leadership Academy, hosted by our Learning and Development team. What a great experience it was! Not only did we learn how to be better leaders for teams, but we got the chance to do a community service project as well. The local Build-A-Bear Workshop joined us at Creative Spaces, and we built teddy bears together, filled them with warm wishes, love and dressed them in t-shirts we decorated for the bears. Our intent was for these bears to find a home where they could bring fun, joy and encouragement to their new owner. After giving it a lot of thought, we decided the best home for our bears was the Ronald McDonald Houseof Kentuckiana. The Ronald McDonald House provides a nice place to stay for families who have traveled from outside the Louisville area with children who are being treated at the hospitals. The bears will find a new home with a family and child experiencing a serious illness. It is our sincere hope that these bears can bring a little light to the lives of these families. Thank you, Ronald McDonald House, for letting us partner with you!

Dental Phobia? Try Oral Sedation

Do you hate going to the dentist so much that you avoid going at all? You’re not the only one. It is estimated that 9% to 15% of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of anxiety or fear. A lot of them are worried about pain or feeling embarrassed. Others have dental phobia. No matter what is causing you stress, oral sedation dentistry can help.

What is Oral Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is when patients take medication to relax during dental procedures. There are different levels of sedation from minimal sedation, where you are still awake but relaxed, to general anesthesia, when you are unconscious. There are several different types of sedation dentistry. At Mortenson Family Dental, we offer IV sedation and oral sedation.

Oral sedation involves taking a small pill an hour before your appointment. This pill, typically Halcion, is just as safe as taking a Valium. After you take the pill, someone else drives you to your appointment where we deliver exceptional care in a comfortable, anxiety-free atmosphere. Patients are awake during the procedure but many have very little memory of the visit. Some patients may fall asleep during the procedure, but can be woken with a gentle shake.

Reasons patients choose oral sedation:

Is Oral Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Oral sedation dentistry allows you the experience dental procedures feeling relaxed and comfortable. Time will pass by fast and many patients report an amnesic effect, meaning they don’t remember the visit at all! While you’re relaxed, your dentist can perform the procedure confidently because they know you’re safe and carefree.

Oral sedation dentistry is even safe enough for children. Parents will need to take a little extra care to ensure their child is relaxed, but we trust you’re already a pro at looking after your loved ones. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has posted some really helpful guidelines on preparing for your child’s sedation dentistry visit.

If your child experiences dental fear or anxiety, please call our pediatric dental specialists at Kid’s Dentistree. We offer a kid-friendly atmosphere, fun activities in the waiting room and team members trained especially for caring for children. Take a tour of one of our offices by clicking here!

Is Oral Sedation Dentistry Right for Me?

Oral sedation dentistry is a safe, minimal sedation method that can allow even the most anxious patients to have their dental needs taken care of. Most treatment plans are simple and take one or two appointments. But even the most extensive treatment can be provided using oral sedation dentistry. Don’t let fear or anxiety keep you and your family from having beautiful, healthy smiles.

Smile Makeover Winner: Tori Pennington

With her wedding day on the horizon, Tori Pennington decided to attend a wedding show in Downtown Louisville. There she expected to gather some ideas about photographers, florists, caterers, decorators and gown fashion. But what she never would’ve expected was to win a smile makeover! Tori says that when she saw the Mortenson Family Dental booth and our Smile Makeover contest, “I thought I’d enter because if I won, I could get rid of my annoying yellow spot and gap.” “But,” she adds, “If I didn’t win … then oh well, I’d get some toothpaste, toothbrush and floss.” Now less than a month later and after just a few visits with Dr. Schuler, her smile is brighter and better than ever before!

Everyone’s complimented me on it. I posted a before and after picture on Facebook and I got several likes and everything. No one really surprised me with their reaction; however, I do find myself smiling a lot more while walking.

Tori’s treatment plan with Dr. Schuler involved two weeks of whitening, one filling and then a midline space closure with composite. A midline space closure is when a dentist closes a gap between two teeth, most commonly a patient’s two front teeth (maxillary central incisors). Dental composite is a type of synthetic, adhesive resin that dentists use to restore teeth or, in Tori’s case, close her gap.

Dr. Schuler was awesome! He was really nice and super funny!

Tori says the response to her new smile has been overwhelming and even her fiancé, who tagged along for her treatments, was happy with the results and surprised at how quick the treatment was. We asked Tori whether or not she was excited for her big day and she said, “Yes, I am super excited!”

I’m even more excited to get my wedding pictures taken with my new smile.
