Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and it is the second leading cause of death for women. But there are also over 2 million survivors of breast cancer in the United States, thanks to the work of groups like the American Cancer Society to fund life saving research. We are proud to join the American Cancer Society this weekend to support the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

How Donations Save Lives

The American Cancer Society has been saving lives for more than a century. Every day, 500 lives that would have otherwise been lost to cancer are saved. None of it would be possible without the generosity of donors like you. Your dollars help us to help people now who are fighting breast cancer in every community, while working to free the world from the pain and suffering of breast cancer tomorrow.

About JDRF One Walk

JDRF One Walk® has a single goal: creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). We hope you’ll join us this year as we walk and raise money for life-changing research for the millions affected by this devastating disease.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. If you have T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. This means you must constantly monitor your blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin from a pump and carefully monitor your eating and activity every single day.

There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D. And—currently—there is no cure. But thereis something you can do to help.

When you join one of the hundreds of JDRF One Walks across the country, the money you raise will support JDRF—the leading global organization funding T1D research. And, you’ll have a great time doing it! That’s because you’ll walk with a committed community that is passionate about doing whatever it takes to help JDRF turn Type One into Type None.
Juvenile Diabetes impacts our families, our patients and our communities. Join our team as we support the JDRF this weekend at Churchill Downs.  Check in is at 11:30.

Friends having fun and celebrating US Independence Day

Four F’s for a Successful Fourth of July Weekend

This Monday is the Fourth of July, a day when we celebrate declaring our independence from Great Britain in 1776. In that Declaration of Independence we talked a lot about fairness and freedom, but our founding fathers probably didn’t foresee some other F’s that would make our Independence Day the awesome holiday it’s become.

What’s your favorite F? Let us know by voting in our poll on Twitter.

Family & Friends

Mixed Race young people making selfie at garden party. Man from Jamaica Playing Guitar. Man on right holding smart phone on selfie stick. In background people holding American flag.

Oops, look at us – already cheating.  This first F is a two-for-one because it’s really all about people. A lot of families plan road trips this weekend to visit other cities, go camping or hit a theme park like Kentucky Kingdom. And friends will get together for grilling out, lawn games or just hanging out enjoying the weather. Whatever you decide to do, remember to pack a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste or some mouthwash to help those relationships get even closer!

Food

A patriotic fruit tart.

This one’s a no-brainer. We’re talking Potlucks on patios with pounds of potato salad and pints of patriotic ice cream flavors. There is nothing quite like a hamburger, hot dog or veggies off the grill in the summer. Throw in an ice-cold glass of sweet tea to wash it down, and you’ll know you’re doing it right.

Don’t forget to drink a glass of water after your meal to wash some of that sugar off your teeth!

Fireworks

friend running with fireworks on a beach afer sunsetWho doesn’t love running around with sparklers after dark or shooting roman candles into the sky and hearing them pop? It really doesn’t matter how many times you’ve heard “I’m Proud to be an American” blaring over a loudspeaker as you watch fireworks light up your city, it’s awesome every time. ‘Nuff said.

Floss Fun

Group of teen girls laughing and eating ice cream at the beach together

You knew we were going to do it, didn’t you? Well here’s your reminder to floss every day. But the last one is not “Floss” and it’s actually the most important F of the weekend: FUN. Our country has come a long way in its short history and though we’ve been through a lot, we have a lot to be proud of! So let’s remember this weekend to enjoy good company, good food and have a great time celebrating what makes us unique.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day!

Eagle U - Youth Success

Eagle University 2016

The fourth annual Eagle University kicks off today at UofL in Louisville, Kentucky! Eagle U is a week-long event where about 200 students stay on campus and learn from world-renowned speakers about life experiences and how to set themselves apart from their peers. At the end of the week, the students get to meet with and interview successful community members for an opportunity to learn from their success. The Mortenson Charitable Foundation is proud to sponsor this event and help the children of our team members and patients learn the skills they need to become future leaders.

What is Eagle U?

During the Eagle U program, participants get a 7 year jump-start on life. Students entering high school through college age build self-confidence, motivation, and direction. Participants will find mentors that give them inspiration, wisdom, and new ways to develop a direction in life and be successful. Participants will also learn life lessons at the hands of those who have actually proven, by their performance, the success of the principles that they teach. At Eagle U, participants will define their goals and discover the tools to reach them.

The eagle has always symbolized independence, strength and focused direction. When you emerge from Eagle U, you’ll have the opportunity to be all of these things as you follow the systems you will be given. They are common sense systems, but not commonly practiced. To be extraordinary, you don’t do ordinary things that ordinary people do.

Why We Choose Eagle U

“It is critical to success to think and to plan ahead,” says Jacque Ramsey, Mortenson Fmaily Dental’s marketing director, “It is also critical to our company culture that we provide opportunities such as Eagle U to our team members’ children and our patients. Eagle U has been an extraordinary experience for the students that have been able to attend over the last three years. We are proud to partner with Eagle U and to support it so that others in the community can benefit from it too.”

Mortenson Family Dental participates by donating to Eagle U so that our team members’ children and our patients can experience the program at a significantly reduced rate. We are committed to helping not only our team members achieve success, but their families and our patients as well. By sending our young people to Eagle U, we are helping them create pathways to success.

Stay tuned to all our social channels this week to follow the students’ activities. And if you’re posting about Eagle U on Twitter or Facebook, be sure to tag #EagleU!

Dr. Wayne Mortenson presents an over-sized check to Crusade for Children

Dr. Wayne presents $10,000 to Crusade for Children

What a great feeling it is to give back to the communities we love! After collecting donations from our patients at Mortenson Family Dental, Kid’s Dentistree and Braces Braces Braces over the past three months, we were able to raise $10,000 for the 63rd annual WHAS Crusade for Children. The Crusade is an organization that raises money for agencies, schools and hospitals to better the lives of special needs children, and has raised over $165 million since it began in 1954. WHAS11 was so impressed with the amount we raised that they invited our founder, Dr. Wayne, on the news to present the check in person.

“Over the years, we have been very involved with the community and have helped many causes. Jacque Ramsey, our director of marketing really felt like this would be a great cause – that would involve our patients and team members and so we decided that it would be a great cause to support.”

– Dr. Wayne Mortenson

Mortenson Family Dental staff at the Shelby Touched Twice Clinic

Touched Twice – Day of Dentistry

On Saturday, March 12, our Mortenson Family Dental team donated a free day of dentistry to the 7th Annual Shelby Touched Twice Clinic, an event aimed at giving back to Kentucky’s communities. This yearly event coordinates with dozens of churches across our state to provide food, toiletries, spa visits, makeup, manicures, pedicures, haircuts, clothing, medical exams and screenings, vision care and dental treatment to local families in need of assistance. It was the 6th year that Mortenson Family Dental has participated in Touched Twice, which is part of a nationwide initiative to heal struggling communities holistically: both those serving and those being served.

Our team was able to see a total of 83 patients on Saturday, and provide 60 cleanings and 43 extractions. It was all in a day’s work for Beth Whitehouse, a team leader in Shelbyville, who says the reason she participates every year is “because it’s important for Mortenson to give back to a community that has given us so much in return.” She says, “This day stands for more than just the dentistry provided; it stands for an entire community donating their time and talents for its members who could use a helping hand.” According to Touched Twice, nearly 15% of Americans are uninsured. This means that for over 42 million people, there is basically a crisis happening in their own backyards. This day of donations and volunteer service proves that you don’t have to travel thousands of miles or spend thousands of dollars to help. All it costs is a few hours of your time to change the lives of the people in your community.

For Zachary Stevenson, who works in Patient Services, experiencing the clinic for the first time was “truly amazing and humbling.” He notes that everyone he helped was extremely grateful, but also that he was impacted greatly by the atmosphere of the day. This is where Touched Twice gets its name: both the people being helped and the people helping are “touched” by the experience.

If you’d like to donate items or volunteer your time for next year’s event, you can sign up on their website
