What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder that disrupts normal breathing during sleep. Disruptions can be slow and shallow breathing or even stopped breathing that lasts longer than 10 seconds. If you have severe sleep apnea you might wake up 20, 30, or 40 times per hour every night. You can’t function well without good sleep. What are the symptoms of sleep apnea?

Signs of sleep apnea include sleepiness during the day, waking up tired, headaches when you wake, and irritability. The only way to get a sleep apnea diagnosis is to do a home sleep test (HST). You won’t have to go to a sleep clinic.

Is sleep apnea treatment covered by insurance?

Sleep apnea is a medical condition that’s usually covered by Medical insurance. What your medical insurance covers depends on the policy.

Will I be able to sleep through the night?

In most cases yes. It depends on your age and specific medical history. If you continue you treatment it will help you sleep through the night. Over the counter medicine, sleep aids or sleeping pills, won’t work for patients with obstructive sleep apnea. But they are sometimes prescribed to help you get comfortable with your treatment, whether it is a machine or an appliance.

Will sleep apnea treatment help me stop snoring?

There are many different causes for snoring. If you have sleep apnea, you may not need to have surgery to stop snoring. While “stop snoring” devices like SnoreStop may help some, we recommend coming in for a sleep test. If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea an appliance or CPAP machine can help you stop snoring.

How long does
the visit take?

Your first appointment will be a free consultation. We will take as much time as we need to answer all of your questions. Most visits will take 30 minutes but some may take longer depending on the type of appointment.

What is a
CPAP machine?

CPAP machines use pressure to keep your airways open during sleep. They usually include three parts: a small machine, a length of tube, and a mask. Resmed and Philips Respironics are the most popular CPAP machine brands. You can also purchase extra CPAP supplies. Different pillows and masks can help with comfort.

Will I have to wear a mask for sleep apnea?

If your treatment involves a CPAP machine you will need to wear a sleep mask. There are several different types of sleep apnea mask. Some masks cover your nose while others cover your nose and mouth. There are other treatments that don’t involve masks, like an oral appliance. Please ask your dentist for more information.

Are there CPAP alternatives?

There are CPAP alternatives. An oral appliance, like a mouthpiece, is right for you if you are hesitant about wearing a mask. An appliance treats sleep apnea without a mask. Patients using an appliance, not a CPAP, are more likely to continue their treatment. Appliances are comfortable and simple to use. They are best for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea.

How much does a sleep apnea machine cost?

Sleep apnea machines vary in price depending on type and maker. Medical insurance will help cover some of the costs.
